Vitalik Buterin has published a new “Lean Ethereum” strawmap, laying out a set of priorities aimed at simplifying Ethereum’s protocol design and reducing complexity across the network’s future development phases.
The proposal, published on the Ethereum Foundation blog, frames the strawmap as a directional outline rather than a finalized roadmap. A strawmap, in Ethereum governance language, is a preliminary sketch of priorities meant to spark community discussion, not a binding implementation plan. Buterin positioned the document as a response to growing concerns about Ethereum’s protocol complexity. The proposal argues that a leaner base layer would make the network easier to audit, maintain, and build on, while reducing the surface area for bugs and security vulnerabilities.
What the Lean Ethereum priorities cover
The strawmap groups its priorities into a few core themes. Protocol simplification sits at the center: reducing the number of precompiles, streamlining the EVM, and trimming legacy features that add maintenance burden without proportional value.
A second theme focuses on pushing complexity to higher layers. Rather than embedding every feature into the base protocol, the proposal favors keeping Layer 1 minimal and letting Layer 2 solutions and application-layer tooling handle specialized functionality.
The third priority area addresses long-term sustainability of Ethereum’s consensus and execution layers. Buterin has previously advocated for changes to Ethereum’s inclusion list design, and the Lean Ethereum strawmap extends that thinking to the broader protocol architecture.
This direction aligns with the Ethereum Foundation’s broader push toward operational efficiency, which has included proposals to cut the Foundation’s own budget and shift toward a more sustainable endowment model.
Why a “lean” framing matters now
The choice to frame the proposal as “lean” signals a deliberate shift in how Ethereum’s core developers are thinking about tradeoffs. Rather than adding features to compete with newer chains, the strawmap argues for doing less at the protocol level, but doing it more reliably.
This matters because Ethereum’s complexity has become a frequent point of criticism. Each upgrade cycle introduces new EIPs, new precompiles, and new edge cases. The strawmap suggests that institutional users who rely on Ethereum for its stability would benefit from a protocol that prioritizes predictability over feature velocity.
Buterin has noted on his public X account that community feedback on the strawmap will shape which priorities move forward. The document is explicitly not a commitment to specific protocol changes or timelines.
The Foundation’s recent organizational restructuring suggests the lean philosophy extends beyond the protocol itself.
